When you think of an ice cream truck, you picture the ice cream man driving down your street as you run outside to chase him for a choco taco or another one of your favorites. And when you think of a food truck, you’re usually getting a meal. However the Taharka Bros. have put together a food truck which serves delicious sweet treats all over Baltimore. Read more....

(Reuters) - Entrepreneurs from one of the grittiest cities in the United States have joined forces with peasant farmers in Haiti to help transform the country's bitter poverty into delicious and life-sustaining ice cream.
A white former human sexuality professor from Alabama and a black Baltimore gourmet ice cream maker are being recognized for their efforts to help Haitian farmers find a market for their high-value vanilla beans and cacao in a product they like to call "ice cream with a purpose."
The unusual pair teamed up two years ago to market Haitian vanilla-flavored ice cream to upscale Baltimore area restaurants.
The Vanilla Project, which provides income for some 650 farmers in rural Haiti, on February 1 earned its creators the Citizen Diplomat Award from Global Ties U.S., a non-profit partner of the U.S. State Department.

Wherever I am, be it a new place I we are visiting on vacation or simply where I happen to be on any given day I am constantly searching on Yelp for good food places in the area. Shortly after I started working downtown, I was looking one afternoon or evening for places to possibly pick up food for dinner after work. If I remember correctly I think I was looking specifically for pizza. Somehow, I stumbled on the Yelp entry for Uncle Wiggly’s Ice Cream (under the label of Taharka Brothers).
What really piqued my attention was the mention of Berger Cookie Ice Cream! I am a huge Berger Cookie fan, so the idea of Berger Cookie ice cream was naturally very interesting to me! What I found was some of the richest, creamiest and delicious combination of flavors in ice cream, including Berger Cookie, Key Lime Pie and Graham Cracker. What I found was Taharka Brothers Ice Cream.
I would later find out that Taharka Brothers is a company founded on an idea of young Black men coming together for something positive, productive and entrepreneurial.

BEST ICE CREAM
Taharka Bros. Ice Cream
It’s always nice to support local companies. Even better when the company has a mission to improve the community. And better still when said company puts out a damn good product. Check, check, and check. Taharka Bros. use not only local ingredients (e.g. Baugher’s peaches), but also work with a fair-trade initiative in Haiti (that supplies them with cacao and vanilla) to come up with sometimes-crazy flavors like star anise and candied fennel, orange clove sorbet, and the always-popular honey graham. The ice cream always has distinct, punctuated flavors, of course no artificial anything, and an exceedingly smooth, soft texture thanks to just the right amount of overrun (or the amount of air whipped into the final product). Look out for the fruit of their recently successful Kickstarter campaign—an ice cream truck/mobile library/hangout spot hitting the street this month.

When it comes to finding delicious ice cream in the city of Baltimore, the rule is: you must visit the Taharka Brother's factory to taste a scoop (or two) of the homemade dessert. The minute you step in, you will be greeted with not only the smell of homemade, creamy ice cream of all sorts at your fingertips, but also a crop young Black men hard at work churning, dancing and explaining why you should try the "Chaka Khan" or the 'Richard Pryor Moment'. Between the assortment of flavors that no other ice cream shop would dare dream of to the live energy of the shop itself, there's no explanation needed as to why the Taharka Bros. Ice Cream is not only bringing in more money, but also becoming the talk of the town...
